Why teach? Is it worth it?

I can honestly say that having my own music school has been a dream since way before college. The dream kept me going through many hard times. There were times I thought about trying something else but, I am the music teacher. It is just who I am. Haha, I am the embodiment of a music teacher!
Okay, if you are a music teacher, then you will understand that we don't exactly choose teaching... it chooses us (well, most teachers in general feel that way). That is why teachers work so hard every day to help make a difference in kids lives.
I think that gifted teachers are the most influential part of our society. Music or any subject for that matter. Homeschool moms to School Principles to Music teachers.

I want to focus on the music teacher.
Why do you want to teach? When asked this question in the beginning of my education journey I said what most music education majors would say, "I had a music teacher who made a difference in my life and I want to help another kid just like me". There is passion required for this field of work. This is what fuels us (me) everyday to continue on this teaching journey.
Sometimes I joke about "earning my stripes in public school". But, public school shaped me and molded me into a better human and better educator. However, I knew long term that I wanted to own my own school.
I saw that homeschool kids were lacking music education. So, I set out to educate homeschool parents on music education and to offer an affordable, interactive music class for kids. Its been exactly one year since I left the public school and started up Donohoo Music School.
One year later, I can say it has been a ROLLERCOASTER! Sometimes I care more than the parents and students and that is always hard to navigate. If a parent doesn't value the lessons, it won't work. If a parent doesn't like me, it won't work. If a parent doesn't encourage the student, it doesn't work. If a student is lackadaisical, it won't work. If a student doesn't ever practice, it won't work. What I mean is that music lessons require commitment. (side note: it is okay to have to take breaks from lessons...but every break you take is a huge set back for the student... and by the way, it is okay to not like music)
Do I make good money? I have potential to make a comfortable living and I hope to reach my goals sooner rather than later! So, is it worth it... is teaching worth it. Yes, 100% yes. But you have to make it work for you. I was gaining weight and losing my mind in public school, so I had to make a change.
I am SO GRATEFUL for the wonderful students that I have in the studio and I can't wait to meet all my new students who are coming soon.

PS: I have spots available both in private lessons and elementary music. Donohoo Music School is a great place to learn and grow!
